Which fish is your favorite kid-friendly pick?
Could do “fairy shrimp” they are sort of like a freshwater sea monkey. I feed them to my African dwarf frogs. Your daughter is adorable. My daughter picked glo fish. Already had a 50 gallon species only black and white skirt tetra tank so the glo version fit right in and added some color to my tank which is nice. Balanced it with red plants which she also picked.😂She likes it and they absolutely grew on me. Glad I have them and they aren’t crammed in a 5 gallon somewhere under a black light.

I have a female betta fish who I saved the life of and she's always happy to see me she kisses the glass it's adorable I named her after a godzilla character Biolantte I have a theme of naming my betta fish after Godzilla characters Rodan is my oldest at 5 years old
I have my Black Skirt Tetras in a 30-gallon tank. They would also do well in a 20-Long or 29-gallon tank.
Tiger Barbs are more of a challenge, since they really should be in a large school (10-15+) with plenty of space to limit aggression.
I'm surprised white clouds didn't make the list. I've never had them but strongly considering it because my wife wants fish in our abandoned 10g, but we don't want to heat the water.
I have a question, can different types of kulhi loaches be in the same tank? I have black kulhi loaches but I really want the ones that have stripes.

"hard or at least neutral water" is a little bit misleading, since hardness and pH are two separate scales. Soft, neutral water is totally achievable and wouldn't be great for your livebearers.

You left out the White Cloud Mountain Minnow. Great little fish, super hardy, will be fine in an unheated 10 gallon. If you can't keep them, then fishkeeping is probably not for you. Cherry Barbs are another fish that I really like and find very hardy. Really colours up in a planted tank, so I agree with that choice. Those Black Skirt Glofish, although not my taste at all, are super hardy. Friend of mine's kid got those from a pet store that just sold it to them with the tank and everything, no cycling (my pet hate) and they all survived.
I think my zebra and leopard danio are pretty colourful now that they're home from the pet store 🙂 The zebras are yellow/gold with blue-green tinged stripes and the leopards look like rainbow trout. I also have Kyathit that are green-blue striped with orange tipped
