😵 How I brought a “dead” brine shrimp back to life.
Every couple months I buy some live brine shrimp to feed my fish but this month I noticed something interesting about some of them.
A handful of them have large egg pouches (meaning they’re pregnant) near the end of their body and I would feed them to my fish without much thought.
As I was preparing the B.S. to be frozen, I accidentally spilled them but this made me wonder: would the babies still hatch even if their mom dried up?
I had to find out so I left momma BS out to dry for ~2 months and then added her into some warm, aerated salt water. I didn’t see any hatchlings for the first few days, but I think that’s because it was too small to notice but after 4 days I finally found one!
In the wild, brine shrimp have evolved to survive in evaporated salt ponds. Yes, the mothers die but their eggs remain in a “yet to be alive” dormant state until the right conditions are met (correct temperature + enough water).
This explains why we’re able to freeze B.S. eggs and conveniently hatch them whenever we want ☻

You didn't revive a dead shrimp, you hatched dehydrated eggs, and that's wonderful enough!

If the conditions they were raised in were prime, sometimes they can hatch from the dead body without needing to be desiccated!
